Education & Training

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has published the A17.4, "Guide for Emergency Personnel" since 1972. The A17.4 provides guidance for the evacuation of passengers from stalled elevator cars as well as firefighters’ service operating procedures. The most recent edition, published in 2015, significantly expands and updates the previous revision, published in 1999.

The 2015 edition adds information on rescue team organization and training, evacuation procedures from elevator cars, rescue following an earthquake, elevator system lockdown, Firefighters’ service operating procedures (updated to A17.1-2010 standards), and emergency/standby power operation.

Careful application of the A17.4 standard, in conjunction with other A17 safety standards, will help users comply with regulations within their jurisdictions, and achieve operational and safety benefits gained from the best-practices detailed within.
