Restricted Key Policy

Overview

We do not sell to the general public. We exclusively serve persons meeting the standards set forth in ASME A17.1, Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators. Generally, keys are sold only to building owners and their managing agents, emergency personnel, and elevator personnel. Customers must provide sufficient information to allow us to verify that they meet these criteria. Orders without sufficient information will be cancelled. While we make every effort to verify that purchases made through this site are legitimate, we cannot be held responsible for improper or unauthorized use of keys. If you are a building owner that is concerned about the security of your elevator, please contact us and we will be happy to consult with you and recommend elevator security solutions to you.

Group 3 - Emergency Operation Keys – General

We restrict the sale of “fire service” and emergency power keys to elevator owners, their managing agents, emergency personnel, and elevator personnel. Note that building owners and managing agents may only purchase keys specific to their elevator, and not our full set, which we sell exclusively to emergency personnel and elevator personnel. Emergency personnel must purchase through their department or agency.

Group 3 - Emergency Operation Keys – Regional

We further restrict regional emergency keys in accordance with local laws. Some jurisdictions, including Virginia, Louisiana, and Florida, have specific regulations regarding the possession of emergency keys. The possession of regional firefighter’s emergency operation keys are restricted, and registration with the State Fire Marshal is required. We can assist you with completing the forms as appropriate for your order and obtaining the keys on your behalf through a State authorized vendor. Please contact us for more information.

High Security Keys

High security keys (e.g. Medeco) are special order items. You must order at least 2 of each key and your order may take up to five business days to fulfill. Positive verification is required for all purchases of high security keys. We reserve the right to cancel any order for high security keys that we deem to be suspicious.

Hoistway Access and Hoistway Door Unlocking Devices (AKA "Drop Keys")

Certain additional restrictions apply to the purchase of hoistway door keys:

  • Elevator personnel are authorized to possess these keys.
  • Firefighters and other emergency personnel trained in procedures set forth in the ASME A17.4, "Guide for Emergency Personnel" (including elevator evacuation procedures and firefighter's service operating procedures) satisfy these requirements, provided that the keys are only used during an emergency. Please contact us if you are unsure whether you meet these requirements before placing your order.
  • Building owners and/or their managing agents may possess these keys in certain circumstances. Generally, at least one key must be kept on any premises where an elevator is located, usually in the motor room. Additionally, a written emergency evacuation procedure is required on any premises where an elevator is located (ASME A17.1, rule 8.6.11.4.2). Authorized personnel designated by the elevator owner who have been properly trained in emergency evacuation procedures may possess these keys during an emergency. Please contact us if you are unsure whether you meet these requirements before placing your order.
